Auditions:

A Bad Year for Tomatoes by John Patrick

Dates: Saturday June 19 between 2:00pm and 4:00pm,
Tuesday June 22 at 7:30pm

Synopsis: Its 1976 and all Myra Marlowe wants to do is escape the madness of her life in Hollywood as a famous T.V actress, write her autobiography and grow some tomatoes. She rents a small cottage in a tiny New England Hamlet called Beaver Haven hoping for some privacy. Instead she gets anything but, peace and quiet. Add to the mix a love struck agent, some annoying nosey neighbours, the local witch, and a manure sales man and Myra has to use some of her Hollywood talent and imagination to scare off uninvited visitors. When the sheriff comes accusing her of murder will it be a bad year for tomatoes?

Character Descriptions:

Myra: 40-60yrs old
Large dynamic role (she is in all but 2 scenes)
Level headed, energetic, eccentric, T.V star and able to play the complete opposite when playing her "twin" sister.

Tom: 40-60yrs old
Typical Hollywood agent. Confident with a big ego.

Reba and Cora: Any age, Country accent if possible
Church social committee, pleasantly annoying, community gossips

Piney: 30-50yrs old. Country accent if possible
Sweet and innocent country boyish type. Cleans up very well.

Willa: 30+
Exotic town witch

Sheriff: Any age, Country accent if possible
Very small role
Straight, serious but a little odd.

Overall, all the actors should be able to do various degrees of loopy and be energetic.

I would like all actors to come to audition with 2 monologues; one to make me laugh and one to make me cry. Or, they can deliver one monologue 2 different ways. I will start with the monologues (closed) then do some cold reads of the script in groupings (open). Ideally, I will make my decision at the end of the audition. If anyone is not able to attend the audition they can call me for an earlier time.

There will be 2 read throughs over the summer. After Labour Day week end rehearsals will be on Wednesdays 6:30 to 9:30 pm and on Sundays 2-5pm. Cast will only need to attend rehearsals during the time scheduled for their scene. During tech week rehearsals will be everyday 7-10pm for all cast and crew.

Thanks,
Denise
